Professor John Armitage and Professor Joanne Roberts of Winchester School of Art have given lectures on the subject of luxury at the Global Fashion Conference in Stockholm, in Sweden.
John Armitage’s invited keynote lecture was entitled ‘Semiotics of the Bedroom: On Luxury Fashion Unboxing Reveals’ and Joanne Roberts’s talk was called ‘Rethinking Innovation, Creativity, and Craft in Luxury Goods’.
Focusing on various innovations in the world of global luxury fashion, the talks highlighted not only the high levels of creativity and craft required to produce luxury goods but also the extraordinary amount of originality displayed by consumers of luxury goods on social media such as YouTube.
Both talks promoted the WSA’s research on luxury which is carried out by the Winchester Luxury Research Group (WLRG). Established in 2014, the WLRG undertakes leading edge investigations into the social, cultural and economic impact of luxury. WLRG members engage in research that recognises the artistic and cultural aspects of luxury in the contemporary globalised world.
WSA is now the UK centre for research on the growing phenomenon of luxury worldwide and works to promote high quality research internationally.
