Developing the best approach to assessment feedback

Initiated by Professor Carol Evans, the University’s Researching Assessment Practices (RAP) group comprises staff and students working in partnership to enhance assessment and feedback practices across the University.

PhD students in Education, Sharifa Al’Adawi and Abdulsalam Almanthari, together with Web Science Undergraduates Tom Davidson and Thomas Rowledge, recently interviewed the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, about the RAP assessment strategy.

The objective of the interview was to raise awareness of the strategy and encourage more students from across the University to join in. The students explained that for them, participating in RAP as student partners is an important opportunity to influence the effectiveness of assessment, and asked Sir Christopher to share his views on this.

Sir Christopher stated that student learning processes are an absolute priority for the University, explaining:

RAP gives us the opportunity to take a really major step forward in terms of developing assessment practices…the real success is actually bringing students together with staff colleagues to work together on this.

Sir Christopher went on to point out that the best way forward in developing active collaborations between staff and students, is to engage the support of Associate Deans and Programme Leaders. He also emphasised that his Senior Management Team are committed to ensuring the success of the innovative RAP Project, commenting:

It’s a bit of a first, and I’ve not come across it at other universities either.

In his closing remarks, Sir Christopher noted how important it is for staff to understand and respond to the student viewpoint on what works best for them and adds the most value to their studies.
