Music on the Mind

Composed by Harvey Brough and performed by singers from the University of Southampton Voices community choir, Music on the Mind is a challenging and unique piece which raises awareness about mental illness by exploring experiences of mental ill-health.

Full of humour and love, occasionally harrowing but in the end, very human and uplifting, the Music on the Mind team invite staff and students to help them raise the funds needed to support this project.

Music on the Mind has a crowd funding page which you can make donations to (and receive tiered rewards in return).

Any contributions made will be put towards the costs of running the event at Turner Sims and will also help to support the group’s sister choir, Mind and Soul 2, both of which are comprised of patients, carers, and colleagues from the community. Through the medium of music, members of these groups hope to both raise awareness of, and reduce the stigma surrounding, mental illness.

For each donation, the project will receive matched funding from the University’s alumni community, which will further enable the team to reach their goal.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Christopher Snowden has endorsed the project, commenting that:

It’s such a fantastic way to raise awareness of mental wellbeing and show off our talented University Voices choir.

Actress, comedian and writer Emma Thompson commented on the premiere performance of Music on the Mind. You can listen to her comments by clicking the video below.

You can read more about Music on the Mind on their website, or on the project’s dedicated blog page.
