Sustainability on our campuses: small changes, big improvements

At Southampton, our students and staff work together to reduce our environmental impact and create more sustainable campuses.

Projects to reduce energy and water usage on our campuses are funded by the University’s Carbon Management Plan.

Recently completed projects funded by the Carbon Management Plan include LED lighting replacements at Montefiore Halls.

In addition, an innovative lighting replacement project has been completed at Wide Lane, where the hockey pitch lighting has been updated.

These two projects alone are projected to save more than £19,000 and 70 tonnes of carbon every year.

The University continues to make routine improvements to the lighting in our buildings. LED bulbs are energy efficient and use only a fraction of the electricity of incandescent bulbs.

You can help to reduce our carbon emissions by making sure that any lights and unnecessary equipment are switched off when not in use.
