The University will celebrate the achievements of around 1,000 students during Winter Graduation Ceremonies in the city this week.
The three days of activity from Tuesday 13 – 15 December, will be the first in which the University’s new Pro-Chancellor, Jon Sopel, will take part since taking up his post in early September. Amongst the graduands is Professor Bertil Andersson, President and Vice-Chancellor of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) who will receive an Honorary Doctorate on Thursday 15 December.
Sopel, a graduate of the University in 1981 with a BSc in Politics and Sociology, has enjoyed a distinguished career with the BBC and currently serves as North America Editor based in Washington, DC. As Pro-Chancellor, he will deputise for Southampton’s Chancellor, Dame Helen Alexander, presiding over graduation ceremonies and playing an active role in the future development of the University. Sopel will also play a key ambassadorial role for Southampton through activities linked to the University’s strategy.
Professor Andersson is a world-leading academic who has demonstrated excellent leadership in higher education. His strong stewardship of NTU’s global partnerships, and continued support of collaboration between NTU and the University of Southampton, has led to successful global Research & Development initiatives like the $100m Photonics Institute which was established at NTU with Southampton and is one of the most advanced in the world.
Southampton’s ten winter ceremonies will feature graduating students from a wide range of subjects related to the University’s Faculties of Business, Law & Art; Humanities; Health Sciences; Medicine; Natural & Environmental Sciences and Physical Sciences & Engineering.
All of this year’s Winter Graduation ceremonies will take place in the Turner Sims Concert Hall on the University’s Highfield Campus.
