The sixth annual Human Rights Lecture will be held on 10 January 2017, supported by Humanities, Business & Law and Amnesty International. This year’s speaker is Philippe Sands QC.

Philippe Sands QC is a Franco-British lawyer, Professor of Laws and Director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals at University College, London. He is the author of sixteen books on international law and his most recent publication, East West Street, has recently been awarded the 2016 Baille Gifford (Samuel Johnson) Prize.
In this year’s Human Rights Lecture, Phillipe will be talking about his experience of writing his book East West Street, part historical detective story, part family history and part legal thriller. In the book, readers are guided between past and present as several interconnected stories unfold in parallel.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday 10 January 2017 from 18:00 – 19:00, Highfield Campus (location TBC, attendees will be emailed with further details). Tickets must be registered by 5 January.
This lecture will be chaired by the Dean of Humanities and Professor of Medieval History, Professor Anne Curry.
October Books will also be present at this year’s event, selling copies of East West Street. There will be a brief signing session after the lecture, as well as a collection for Amnesty International.
