Fidel the musical

Dr Denise Baden of the University’s Southampton Business School has written the script for a musical which tells the full story of the Cuban revolution and the role of Cuba in the Cold War.

The musical, entitled Fidel, began as an educational and engagement exercise, with songs being sourced from students across the UK.

Following the death of Fidel Castro in November 2016, an amended version of the song ‘Hasta La Victoria’ from the musical was performed at the Fidel Castro memorial in London. In addition, Dr Baden was interviewed by the BBC on the Cuban and global perception of Fidel Castro, as well as the Cuban people’s experience of life under his rule.

Fidel is now ready to be staged, and Dr Baden is raising money via crowd funding to bring the musical to Edinburgh festival. The Arts Council have committed to matching funds donated, once the project raises £1250. The deadline for donations is Friday 23 December 2016.

Dr Baden is keen to hear from musical theatre groups, colleges, and individuals interested in putting on productions of the musical, as well as anyone who would like to be involved in the project. Please contact: [email protected] for further details.
