University awarded grant from Europe for superlubricants project

Horizon 2020, the EU Research and Innovation programme, has awarded the University €930,000 for the SOLUTION project which develops lubricants used in industry.

Satellites and space probes use lubricants to minimise friction in a very harsh environment. They are also used in cars to lower friction in bearings, as well as transmission, and to reduce fuel consumption.

SOLUTION is coordinated by Dr Tomas Polcar, an Associate Professor in Coatings and Nanotribology in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment.

The project, which combines state-of-the-art research with training and education of PhD students, will have its home at the National Centre for Advanced Tribology (nCATS) in Southampton.
