Does it have to go 1st class?

University spend on Royal Mail postage is in excess of £60,000 per annum. Over 50% of post is being sent first class, whereas our peers are typically sending only 20% of their post at this expensive rate.

We all have a part to play in reducing overall University spend, and first class post should only be used when it is essential to do so.

The Post Room continually strive to reduce costs and have introduced new carriers, Whistl, to help reduce costs on second class post.

From 3 January 2017, the post room will be introducing special red mail pouches, specifically for first class items (of any size). This will help the sender to think twice before making the decision to send first class, and also enable the Post Room to monitor which departments are sending abnormally high quantities of first class post.

With second class post being 25% cheaper and arriving in 2-3 working days, it is suitable for most business requirements.

All other forms of post, for example special delivery and signed for, are not currently affected by this initiative.
