The Copyright Licensing Agency data collection captures photocopying of copyright material from published sources (or extracts from them) such as books, magazines, journals and digital originals. Analysis of the data collected is used to help distribute royalty payments to the authors, publishers and visual artists whose work is being used.
During the last financial year, the CLA distributed more than £60m, so the University’s role is an integral and much valued part of this process.
Data collection focuses on academic departments – data should be provided by lecturers or any staff member who makes copies on behalf of academic staff. The focus is on resources which are used for teaching. Printed course packs which include copyright material are within scope of this data collection.
The collection of data will take place over 6 weeks, starting Monday 16 January and ending on Friday 24 February.
If you are photocopying from books, journals or other originals, please take a few moments to read the red instruction poster located by relevant copiers. All that is required is a single copy of the identifying page of the book, journal or magazine (title or verso page), ideally including the ISBN/ISSN (number). Then, on the CLA data label, record the number of pages copied and number of sets made and post the page into the collection box.
For Course Packs/Lecture notes/Reader packs which include copyright material and are printed in Departments, one full copy of each Pack should be supplied in the Collecting Box, not just an identifier page.
Any Course Packs or similar sent to the Print Rooms do not need to be added to the Collecting Box, as different arrangements have been made.
