Pride & Prejudice: Memoirs of an LGBTIQ+ Rights Lawyer

The University’s LGBT+ Staff Network is delighted to host a Distinguished Lecture given by S Chelvan on Monday 16 January 2017 from 18:00 – 19:00, Room 1076 L/T, Building 58, Highfield Campus.

Southampton Alum Chelvan is a Barrister, Academic and Activist based at No5 Chambers in London.

Listed as a Leading Junior in Immigration by the legal directories for the past decade, Chambers and Partners UK 2017 refers to him as: “an esteemed and highly respected immigration barrister who is particularly recognised for his LGBTQ rights work”.

Listed as the highest ranked lawyer at number 43 in the Independent on Sunday’s 2015 Rainbow List of the 101 most influential LGBTI individuals in the UK, Chelvan was also named a ‘Legal Hero for Legal Pride’ by the Bar Council, Law Society and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) in 2015.

During the lecture, Chelvan will share his personal experiences in litigation from the First-tier Tribunal to the Supreme Court and the European Courts, developing a case precedent practice in LGBTQ asylum law over the past 15 years.
