Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences: You Said, We Did

The Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences (FNES) has academics and students working on many of the world’s most important issues advancing scientific excellence.

Students’ feedback helps to shape university services and, in turn, improves the student experience.

Throughout the year, students have fed back on a number of aspects that they would like to see improved within the Faculty. Find some examples below showing how the Faculty has implemented this feedback:

  • You said: You wanted your lectures to be captured so you can watch them again.
  • We did: We have been trialling Panopto lecture capture across our Chemistry, Ocean and Earth Science, Biological Sciences & Natural Sciences courses. After positive feedback from students, we are now capturing all FNES lectures, where possible.

  • You said: You want more tutorial contact, especially in later years of study.
  • We did: We are looking at effective ways to ensure students have more opportunities to meet with tutors. This could either be on a voluntary or on demand basis where students can make appointments when tutors are available. Other options we are looking into involve meetings that are more formally timetabled.

  • You said: You would like more information on marking criteria before work is submitted.
  • We did: We are working to ensure that marking criteria is available and that students are more aware and know where to find this resource. We will continue to communicate with students and your course reps to identify where this can be further improved.

  • You said: You wanted the opportunity to feed back on a module while it was still being delivered.
  • We did: All FNES modules will have some form of mid-module feedback opportunity. We are trialling different methods to do this across the Faculty which include the use of smart phone technology in lectures, special feedback meetings to encompass all modules, and a generic electronic feedback site. We will work with students to assess and select best practice for all.

Students are welcome to get in touch with any feedback regarding their course and university services. Find out how to give feedback by following the links below:

Students are invited to share their feedback at the next Student Forum taking place on Monday 20 February. An announcement will be made on SUSSED soon, so watch this space!
