New Year brings new and innovative University spinout success

AccelerComm is the brainchild of Dr. Rob Maunder and Dr. Taihai Chen from Electronic and Computer Science and its products are 5G-ready error correction decoders for wireless systems.

The introduction of 5G wireless systems will allow us to download and view data ten times faster than we currently can on our mobile devices. This cutting-edge technology could be at our fingertips in five years’ time if superfast hardware is advanced to meet high-tech demands. Drs Maunder and Chen are helping this goal become a reality.

Mobile systems require error correction decoders to process information, however current state-of-the-art decoders will be too slow for the next wave of wireless technology. Dr. Maunder, an expert in wireless communication algorithms and hardware, has produced 5G-ready error correction decoders which he is spinning out through AccelerComm.

The company has been two years in the making. Dr. Maunder, a Southampton graduate himself, initially developed the technology and then, working closely with Research and Innovation Services, sought engagement with SetSquared. He undertook Researcher to Innovator training and subsequently, with Dr. Chen, took part in the ICURe programme which focuses on identifying and commercialising University research.

AccelerComm secured a grant through Innovate UK in 2016, enabling it to commercialise its technology. It also received investment from IP Group.

The company also benefitted from support through Future Worlds and is exhibiting at Mobile World Congress, as part of the UK Trade and Industry stand in Room O36 in Hall 7.
