Research and education of the highest quality define Humanities at the University. The Faculty are passionate about investigating what makes us human, from language and music to philosophical debate, history and culture.
Students’ feedback helps to shape university services and, in turn, improves the student experience.
Throughout the year, students have fed back on a number of aspects they would like to see improved within the Faculty. Below you will find some examples of how the Faculty has implemented this feedback:
English:
- You said: You wanted more flexibility to submit work early.
- We did: We made the deadline for dissertation drafts more flexible so you can submit draft work to your supervisor as soon as it’s ready.

Philosophy:
- You said: First year Philosophy classes were too large and you wanted more variety.
- We did: We put on more first year optional modules and increased the number of modules open only to philosophy students. This has resulted in significantly smaller first year classes.
- You said: You wanted easier access to your personal academic tutors.
- We did: We introduced an online sign up system for personal academic tutor meetings.
History:
- You said: You wanted more clarity about how your work was marked.
- We did: History introduced new marking criteria with separate criteria for a low 2.1 and a high 2.1, as well as specific criteria for coursework assessments and exams.
- You said: You wanted clearer guidance on how to present your arguments like a historian.
- We did: We introduced writing workshops in both semesters tailored to the needs of History students, which are intended to help you analyse and understand expectations, and organise your thinking and presentation more effectively.
Archaeology:
- You said: You wanted more support when planning your dissertations.
- We did: We introduced informal weekly seminars to provide students with feedback on ideas for dissertation projects.
- You said: The timings of your dissertation presentations were hard to manage alongside January deadlines.
- We did: We moved the timing of dissertation presentations from January to the first half of semester two to reduce clashes with other assignment deadlines.
