Removal of spinal point 1 from the University’s pay scale

Further to previous communications in September and December 2016, regarding the University and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) led 2016-17 pay negotiations, the University has already applied a base pay uplift to all points of the national pay spine, effective 1 August 2016.

In addition to this base pay uplift, the final settlement confirmed the deletion of spinal point 1 from the national UCEA single pay spine effective 1 April 2017. Full details of the negotiations and final settlement are available on the UCEA website.

The University is now preparing to remove spinal point 1 from its payroll and related systems effective 1 April 2017.

Spinal point 2 will become the lowest point on our Level 1-6 pay scale effective 1 April 2017. Employees on spinal point 1 will automatically be moved to spinal point 2 effective 1 April 2017, and new appointments to Level 1a will be made at spinal point 2 effective 1 April 2017. Details of the University’s pay scales can be found here.

Due to the University’s voluntary application of an allowance in line with the current Living Wage Campaign rate, affected employees will not see a material effect on their salaries as a result of this change, and managers will not see a material effect on their staff cost budgets.
