The Vice-Chancellor has given Professor Colin Grant, Vice-President (International) special responsibility for representing the University in regards to Brexit.
Commenting on the appointment, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden said:
Brexit will lead to fundamental changes in the way the UK and University work with Europe and the world, as well as having implications for our staff, students and some of our funding.
This is an area of great importance to the University, which is already considering how it will address these changes and I am delighted that we can benefit from the experience of Professor Grant in representing the University on Brexit as the implications become known.
Responding to his new responsibility, Professor Grant said:
I am a beneficiary of European mobility. I studied in Germany and France, I was a postdoctoral fellow in Germany and a visiting professor in Paris.
I am passionate about being the best possible friend to Europe. This means representing the University’s broadest possible interests across all areas covered by Brexit: staff, students, education, mobility, research, policy.
He continued:
I think it will help that I sit on two national bodies: the British Council Education Advisory Board and the Universities UK International Strategic Advisory Board. Both of these bodies are highly invested in the Brexit process and in getting the best possible deal for higher education. I have also served for some years on the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Global Partnerships Committee and will engage strongly with colleagues there.
