Philosopher to begin two year fellowship after being awarded €195,455 Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant

Nils-Hennes Stear (currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Autonomous University of Mexico) has been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship funded by a €195,455 grant.

Starting in October 2017, Nils will spend two years with Philosophy at the University, working on his project entitled: Arts and Ethics.

The focus of his project involves exploring the ways in which an artwork’s ethical character bears on its aesthetic qualities. For example, if a film embodies or endorses a racist perspective, is it artistically flawed as a result?

The project will involve a number of workshops and conferences, as well as a summer school. There are also ambitious plans for engaging non-academic audiences, including special exhibitions at local museums and galleries. Truly interdisciplinary, the project aims to involve colleagues in other disciplines across the University.

This high-profile work will further raise the international reputation of Philosophy at Southampton for work in the philosophy of art and ethics.
