New teaching and learning centre: construction to begin soon

Work on the University’s new teaching and learning centre moves into a new phase this week. Site preparation contractor, PTC, will complete their works on the Salisbury Road site, which began last July, and hand over control to construction contractor, BAM.

A lot has been accomplished in the development area over the past seven months. Building 58a has been demolished; the area between Buildings 58 and 2 has been excavated to make way for a new landscaped zone; extensive service diversions have taken place to allow power and water connections for the new building.

In addition, Broadlands car park has been extended; the Gower car park has been reconfigured to allow better flow of vehicles and to include visitor parking; and the area on which the new building will stand has been cleared and prepared for construction.

The new building is scheduled to open in 2019 and will provide an extensive suite of teaching and learning space – from a 250-seat lecture theatre and a range of large flexible teaching rooms, to computer space and independent learning areas. The building will also include a café, and the project incorporates surrounding landscape improvements.

We will soon be introducing the programme of works for the two-year construction phase. You can keep up to date with latest works updates by visiting the development website.
