Quantum cats shortlisted for film festival prize

The University’s Dr Simone De Liberato has been shortlisted for an international film festival award for his three-minute film, Approaching Reality.

One of ten finalists for the Quantum Shorts 2016 festival, Approaching Reality uses colourful cats, a one-eyed observer reminiscent of a Cyclops, and a musical crescendo to explain the scientific concept of linear superposition to the public.

Over the coming weeks, Approaching Reality will be shown alongside other shortlisted titles at the Art Science Museum, Singapore; the Glasgow Science Centre, Scotland; the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia; and Science World in Vancouver, Canada.

De De Liberato commented:

It’s fantastic that the shortlisting panel for Quantum Shorts has highlighted Approaching Reality from such an extensive list of entries and I look forward to hearing the judges’ final outcome soon. I hope this project and the positive coverage it’s receiving can inspire more people to explore the rich world of theoretical physics.

The Approaching Reality project has benefited from a Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence grant that incorporated musician Martin Fogel, and has also benefited from a University of Southampton outreach grant that helped hire two animators.
