Nursing leads six subjects to top 50 in QS World Rankings

Nursing at the University is ranked 10th in the world and third in the UK according to the QS World Rankings by Subject 2017.

The Rankings also feature five other subjects where Southampton is ranked amongst the top 50 in the world:

  • Archaeology – 29th globally and eighth in the UK;
  • Earth and Marine Sciences – 31st globally and ninth in the UK;
  • Engineering – Mineral & Mining – 40th globally and first in the UK;
  • Hospitality & Leisure Management – 48th globally and seventh in the UK;
  • Performing Arts – 50th globally and 14th in the UK.

Southampton is also ranked between 51st – 100th in the world (but not receiving a specific numerical ranking) in a further seven subject areas including: Engineering – Electrical, Medicine, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, Sports-related Subjects, and Statistics & Operational Research.

This year’s results build on the University’s strong showing in the QS subject rankings last year, driven by Southampton’s continually improving academic reputation.

Nursing’s excellent performance for the second consecutive year in what was a new category for QS in 2016 is powered by a very high reputational rating amongst academic peers around the world, as well as a score above 95 out of 100 for research citations.

Professor Mandy Fader, Dean of Health Sciences said:

We are delighted that our commitment to excellence in nursing education and research is reflected in this latest World QS ranking. We believe that first class research is one of the key drivers to delivering care of the highest quality and ensuring that nursing continues to be a profession that attracts the brightest and the best.

The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings reflect internationally-recognised indicators of excellence to rate and rank the world’s leading universities. In 2016, Southampton consolidated its position in the QS World University Rankings, placing 87th overall and 17th amongst UK universities ranked.
