Student sporting success at BUCS Indoor National Championships

Congratulations to a number of our sports teams who won medals at the British University Colleges Sport (BUCS) Indoor National Championships last month. We sent nine sports teams in total, from athletics to trampolining, who all represented the University at this prestigious competition.

Find out a selection of winning highlights from a few of our teams below:

Athletics

Team member Daniel Offiah competed in the 60m semi-final and ran one of the top ten fastest times on the day, finishing the race in 6.97 seconds.

Georgina Russell made it to the semi-finals of the 800m, where she placed 6th and her best time for the weekend was 2:20.61.

Triple jumper Toby Melville, who is ranked 28th in the UK, impressed with a personal best jump of 14.45m in his heats and finished 7th in the finals.

Judo

The Judo team came away with two medals in total, with Callum Rollo (top-left) winning silver in the Men’s Kyu grade under 90KG, and Daulet Illyasov (top-right) winning bronze in the Men’s Kyu under 81KG groups.

Trampolining

The Trampolining Club had a fantastic weekend in Sheffield, taking home an incredible seven medals including four gold and three bronze across the synchronised, individual and team categories.

The club’s President Rhys Gray took home the title of national champion for the second year running with a gold medal in the BUCS Elite Men’s category. Rhys also won another gold medal as part of a team effort with Louis Lister and Joe Deevoy in the group category.

The club had the biggest team out of all the universities competing, entering more pairs in the Synchronised category than any other.

Swimming

Leon Berchie, the men’s team captain, narrowly missed out on a medal in the 100m butterfly final. Leon also qualified for the 50m butterfly final with Cristian Rotundu, finishing in 7th and 5th position out of ten respectively, with Cristian also breaking the club record.

Leon Berchie, Mateo Maciuniak, Cristian Rotundu and Alex Mason made up the A team competing in the relay and finishing 8th in the freestyle 4 x 100m final, and then coming 1st in the 4 x 100m Individual Medley Relay B final, both of these performances broke club records.  

Overall, the club came in at 27th place out of a possible 53, breaking various club records during the competition.
