New restrictions on electronic equipment on certain flights to the UK

New restrictions on taking electronic devices in aircraft cabins have been introduced on inbound flights to the UK from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

On these flights, all phones, tablets and laptops must be placed in your hold luggage if they are larger than 16cm in length, 9.3cm in width, and 1.5cm in depth. In practice, this means that only smartphones will be allowed on board as hand luggage. Any phone, Kindle, tablet or laptop that is larger than these limits – even if you bought it at the airport in a duty free shop – must be placed in hold luggage, or they could be confiscated. These rules must also be followed for connecting flights via these countries, even if your journey started elsewhere.

Staff are reminded to check the current government and airline advice on electronic equipment ahead of any flight, bearing in mind that rules can change at short notice. Non-compliance with security requirements may result in confiscation of your device, which may contain sensitive or valuable information belonging to the University.

It is already a requirement on ALL flights that electronic devices are charged before travel. If your device doesn’t switch on when requested, you won’t be allowed to take it onto the aircraft.

It is very important that staff travelling with University devices ensure and verify that the devices are suitably encrypted and synchronised to University storage – to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information. If you have any queries, please contact ServiceLine before travelling.

These new restrictions are being introduced for passenger safety and the University expect staff to co-operate fully.
