A huge thank you to everyone who ran the ABP Southampton Marathon, Half or 10k last Sunday 23 April in aid of our campaign for the Centre for Cancer Immunology.
Collectively, our team of over 230 runners (made up of staff, students, alumni and members of the local community) did a wonderful job and have so far raised an amazing £35k. With the campaign total now at over £21m, this takes us even closer to the £25m target.
One of our campaign runners was Charlotte Moss (pictured with her medal at the centre of the bottom left image above), who took part in a cancer immunology clinical trial at Southampton to treat her stage three melanoma (advanced skin cancer). Now over 5 years’ cancer free, Charlotte ran the 10k and we were so proud to see her cross the finish line. This is what our research is all about and why your support will make a life-changing difference.
There was a fantastic atmosphere on the day, with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) and Communications & Marketing supporting the event, and Raise and Give (RAG) volunteers running the water station at Highfield campus and cheering the runners on. The sea of blue campaign T-shirts made for a highly visible University of Southampton presence.
Professor Tim Elliott, Director for the new Centre for Cancer Immunology said:
Congratulations to everyone who ran in aid of the campaign. A fantastic team effort – thank you! You have taken us a step closer to opening the UK’s first centre dedicated to cancer immunology research.
