Staff and students jointly publish article in peer-reviewed journal

Staff and students from the Centre for Environmental Science have jointly published an article in Waste Management, the most prestigious and impactful journal for this subject area.

The Editorial on waste/resource management developed out of a 45-minute workshop led by Ian Williams, Professor of Applied Environmental Science. The session involved academic staff and students from Environmental Science.

Ian Williams explains:

It was part of an innovative experiment to see if we could produce an original, interesting, topical, coherent and fully agreed Editorial on the subject of waste/resource management in the workshop followed by a couple of hours of writing.

He says that the exercise is important for many reasons:

It illustrates the link between research and teaching. Carefully-planned effort in the classroom can ultimately result in better research.

The process has helped students understand how research ideas are turned into papers and given them something rather unique and interesting for their CVs.

The exercise has been a great example of collegiality and Ian thinks it is the first time that a group of staff and students have jointly published their agreed opinion via an Editorial in an international peer-reviewed journal.
