Lord O’Neill of Gatley to open University conference on AntiMicrobial Resistance

Staff and students are invited to a conference about AntiMicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention on 5 June, from 09:00 to 17:00 at Botley Park Hotel, Southampton.  Book your place here.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae has developed resistance to nearly all antibiotics and is classed as a ‘superbug’.

The event is organised by the Network for Anti-Microbial Resistance and Infection Prevention (NAMRIP). Sir Christopher Snowden will introduce the event, Lord O’Neill of Gatley will deliver the keynote address and Lord Selbourne will give a speech at dinner.

Lord O’Neill of Gatley chaired the UK Government’s AntiMicrobial Resistance (AMR) Review and Lord Selborne, who was Chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1996 – 2006, represents UK Government policy on AMR in the House of Lords.

The conference entitled ‘Bridging the Gap between Engineering and non-Engineering research to fight AntiMicrobial Resistance’ will share updates from NAMRIP members working in this area.

In particular, it will highlight the multidisciplinary approach to this global problem with research engineers working alongside colleagues from social and human sciences and medicine.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major issues facing our species: by 2050, if not tackled, it will kill more people than cancer, and cost us globally more than the size of the current global economy (Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, 2014.)

The University has some world-leading research in this area and the conference welcomes everyone interested in the subject whether undergraduates, academics, representatives from industry or members of the public.
