Politics Professor comments on the role of the youth vote in the election outcome

Gerry Stoker, Professor of Politics and Governance, provided commentary throughout the night on local radio as the UK General Election results unfolded. With just 15 minutes sleep, Gerry spoke on BBC South News this morning, commenting on the importance of young people to the outcome.

He said:

“It was a very good night for Labour with some fantastic results in the South and a good overall performance in terms of share of the vote. This was a lot to do with the youth vote. Young people were important especially as they have always been a group that wouldn’t turn out so well. Jeremy Corbyn appealed to them directly and to a group of activists in constituencies. Getting that young vote led to a six per cent increase in turnout in some of these constituencies the Labour Party was winning.”
