Professor to advise United Nations 2017 Human Development Report

Professor of International Social Policy, Asghar Zaidi, has been invited to serve as a member of the 2017 Human Development Report (HDR) Advisory Panel.

He has been selected for this role in recognition of his research into ageing and wellbeing in later life, specifically his work on the Active Ageing Index and the Global AgeWatch Index.

Over the years, the HDR has had extensive influence over worldwide debate on development issues. This year, it has particular significance – looking to help fulfil the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the aim of ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all by 2030. Over the years, the HDR Advisory Panels have involved many distinguished human development experts and Nobel Laureates.

Through his work, Professor Zaidi has made a major contribution to highlighting the importance of the older population in the SDGs. He commented:

It is a great honour to have been invited in my personal capacity to advise the HDR team in this way. I am passionate about the importance of older people’s contribution to societies around the world and about issues of human development generally.  I look forward to channelling my expertise in this area to help shape the 2017 HDR report.
