Horizon 2020 looking good for Southampton

The University is well-placed in terms of EU funding for research according to the latest figures released by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Southampton is ninth amongst UK institutions and 26th in Europe in terms of funding via Horizon 2020 with 69M Euros awarded to 94 bids by the end of May, 2017. Horizon 2020 is the current EU framework for research and innovation which runs through to 2020.

Our strong engagement with European partners allows us to conduct research of the very highest quality whilst allowing that work to have greater and wider-ranging impact,”said Professor Mark Spearing, the University’s Vice-President (Research and Enterprise). “Funding from EU programmes is an important enabler of this ambition and connects strongly with the international pillar of the University’s strategy.”

Professor Spearing continued:

“Whilst the Brexit negotiations commence, and the prospect that future access to Horizon 2020 and successor programmes is potentially at risk, we continue to make strong representations to the government on the importance of our European collaborations and maintaining access to EU funding opportunities,”

“We encourage colleagues across the University to continue to foster existing and new European partnerships and make further bids for Horizon 2020 funding in the months ahead.”

Professor Spearing recognises the introduction of the European Research Council ten years ago and the establishment of the University’s EU office as a joint venture between RIS and Finance as contributing factors to improving the number of successful EU funding bids. Over the last 17 years, the University’s research outputs which have international partners has risen to 60% from less than 25% in 2000.

The University’s EU Office continues to play a facilitation role for Southampton’s research community and to assist with all bids and contracts related to EU collaboration and funding. Please email [email protected] for advice and further assistance.
