Last chance to book your free seat at the Sustainable Cities Public Lecture

On Wednesday 19 July the University will be hosting the first lecture in the 2017 Public Lecture series, which focuses on the Environment. There are just a few spaces remaining for this free event, where transport to London is also provided free of charge.

This first event in the series will cover the topic of sustainable cities. The world’s population has tripled in the last 70 years, most of the global population and capital goods are now concentrated in urban areas. Cities have become central to social development and economic prosperity.

Globalisation, urbanisation and climate change are interacting in a way that is unprecedented, placing conflicting pressures on our natural environment and our urban service delivery systems. This presents an urgent challenge to politicians, planners, architects, scientists and engineers alike. How do we create resilient, sustainable cities?

By attending this event you will have the opportunity to hear three keynotes delivered by:

  • Professor William Powrie Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment,
  • Jane Wernick CBE, a University alum and Director of engineersHRW
  • Richard Bonner UK Cities Director for Arcadis.

Following the keynotes a panel discussion will take place where our experts will explore and discuss the challenges, trade-offs and innovative approaches we are using to make urban systems more environmentally sustainable, joining the keynotes speakers for the panel discussion will be Professor Stephen Holgate who teaches in the University’s Medicine department and Professor Margaret Bates from the University of Northampton.

The University has a limited number of tickets to attend this event, which takes place at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in London from 16:30 on 19 July. Transport will be provided from Highfield Campus to and from the venue.

If you would like to attend please email [email protected] with your name, email address and your area of study. Successful applicants will be notified shortly.
