Volunteers needed for clinical trial into genetically modified oils

Volunteers are needed for a clinical trial to test a vegetable oil that has been modified, using GM technology, to contain fatty acids present in fish oil that are beneficial to health.

Camelina sativa plant and its oil-rich seeds which are used in the clinical trial

The trial is led by Graham Burdge, who is a professor of Nutritional Biochemistry within the Human Development and Health (HDH), Faculty of Medicine.

The aim of the study, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), is to test whether the modified oil can replace oily fish as a source of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.

To be eligible to participate, volunteers need to be:

  • Men and women aged 18 to 30 years or 50 to 65 years
  • In general good health
  • Willing to give blood samples
  • Willing to attend a clinic at Southampton General Hospital on three occasions (1 short appointment of one hour and two longer appointments of eight to nine hours, at least two weeks apart)
  • Willing to help with a nutrition research study.

Volunteers will be reimbursed for their participation and reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

If you would like to know more about the research or might be interested in helping with this study, please contact: Dr Annette West or call her on: 023 8120 5252.
