Major international honour for Southampton Professor of Ocean and Climate Change

Professor Eelco Rohling is one of a select list of 2017 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fellows that have been announced today (Thursday, 27 July).

Eelco is a Professor of Ocean and Climate Change within Ocean and Earth Science at the University and also at the Australian National University (ANU).

“I am extremely pleased to be awarded an AGU Fellowship,” says Professor Rohling. “This Fellowship is awarded to only one in a thousand members of the AGU each year”.

Working with partners across the world, Eelco has developed a new method of reconstructing past changes in sea level by measuring oxygen isotope ratios in microfossils from cores retrieved from the Red Sea sea-floor. By determining how fast sea-level changed during warmer periods between ice ages, scientists have formed a better understanding of the potential for future sea-level rise.

Professor Rachel Mills, Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences commented,

Eelco’s significant work at the University of Southampton also includes generating new insights into what drives climate change and predicting the consequences of changes to the water cycle for ocean circulation and marine life.

His ability to think big, yet focus on detail and challenge the status quo has led to great papers, a stream of graduates from his lab who work around the world and a global reputation.

This Honour is a testament to his huge contributions to the field and demonstrates the wide-scale recognition from his peers around the globe. I am proud to have colleagues like this – congratulations Eelco.”
