Inspiring young people to take up modern languages

Despite our exit from the European Union, Modern Languages and Linguistics (MLL) is still attracting a significant number of students to its outreach activities.

Professor Marion Demossier, Head of Modern Languages says:

“This year MLL attracted 360 students to our outreach activities. We are very encouraged by this interest in our study days. It shows that languages are still regarded as an important, employable skill to have in an interconnected and globalised world.”

MLL has been in the UK’s top five language departments for the past 10 years. The department offers primary and secondary schools outreach activities to inspire young people to take up Modern Languages of all Key Stages and at University. It was ranked fourth best in the 2017 Guardian University Guide for the quality of its teaching, staff-student ratios and graduates’ job prospects.

As core members of the Routes into Languages network which promotes the take-up of languages and student mobility, the department runs successful Able Linguist Days for year 8, and Study Days for year 12 students, as a key focus of their outreach and recruitment agenda.

The events draw on the research and teaching excellence of the department’s world-leading academics and provide an insight into studying languages and cultures at university level.

The Department has produced the following podcasts to attract students to study at Modern Languages and Linguistics:

MLL’s other activities include consultation with schools to help develop their language teaching curriculum, talks and language days led by Modern Languages students and the successful Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS) module, which awards academic credit to students who are working with teachers in schools and colleges.
