The team secured more than £5,000 for charity and helped raised awareness for the Cancer Immunology Campaign.
Professor Tim Elliott, Director for the new Centre for Cancer Immunology said:
“Congratulations to Jeremy and crew for a fantastic achievement! We are so grateful for all the awareness they have generated for the Campaign.”
The adventure spanned 2,400 miles (1,400 nautical miles), took 38 days, three hours and three minutes to complete helping them become the 3rd fastest crew to complete the challenge.
The four-man crew (original member, Claire, pulled out because of injury) lived in two cabins with a bucket for a toilet. They enjoyed a wealth of wildlife throughout the trip including dolphins, minke whale, puffins, cormorants, gannets and seals.
Rough times along the way included a 3-day patch of bad weather in the North Sea which saw them living in wet weather gear, battling 25mph winds and nine metre high waves, to travel 1.5 miles in 1.5 hours to reach the safety of Eigg harbour, off Scotland’s west coast.
Despite the low points, they kept their sense of humour. Jeremy explains:
“All of us suffered from hallucinations caused by a combination of seasickness tablets and tiredness. Rhys imagined he saw a dalmation whale and then struck up a conversation with a one-armed man sitting on the side of the boat, much to our amusement!”
Jeremy encourages others to follow their dreams:
“It doesn’t matter what the challenge is, I would say if you really want to do something, just have the courage to go out and do it. Don’t be scared of the unknown, it’s never as scary as you imagine it to be!”
Jeremy will hold a talk on his trip in the autumn – look out for more details on SUSSED.
