Delegation to strengthen Southampton-India links

This week (4 September), the University is engaging with India as never before.

Following the hugely successful visit of His Excellency Ambassador, Mr Dinesh Patnaik to the University a few weeks ago, Professor Colin Grant, Vice President (International), is leading one of the largest university delegations ever seen to India.

The delegation comprises University academic leaders in education, chemical technologies, marine and maritime, management, demography and social science more broadly. The group also includes colleagues from the International Office and Development and Alumni Relations, and the University’s Special Advisor on India, Mr Amarjit Singh.

As well as engaging with the finest minds in India – for example with IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and many specialist institutions and ministries – the University will also host two major alumni receptions in Chennai and New Delhi.

Prior to the alumni reception in New Delhi, Professor Grant is signing a formal agreement with Mr Amreesh Chandra of Chandra Links Education India, to develop next generation leaders in education.

Professor Grant commented:

“If there is one word that encapsulates the delegation it is this: partnership and the vision of the agreement with Mr Chandra sets the tone for our overall engagement with this wonderful country.

“This strong engagement also sits perfectly with our major Commonwealth engagement with the Commonwealth Secretary General in developing thinking to promote the blue economy.

“Despite the many challenges facing the world today, this visit makes one point very clear: the University of Southampton is and will remain open to the world!”
