Congratulations to Professor Graham Reed, Deputy Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and Professor of Silicon Photonics, who has been made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Professor Reed joins a stellar list that includes some of the world’s leading innovators and business people made Fellows by the Academy, including a number of Southampton colleagues from both Physical Sciences and Engineering and Engineering and the Environment.
Reacting to the news, Professor Reed said:
“I am delighted and honoured to be elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to find extremely talented people to join my group, and I see this as recognition of the contribution of the entire group, past and present. The group is stronger today than it has ever been, and I see us continuing to make a significant contribution in the future.”
Acknowledged as one of the pioneers in the field of Silicon Photonics, Professor Reed has carried out award-winning work for more than 25 years. His innovations have been widely adopted by industry, and he has received worldwide acclaim for technical contributions and international leadership roles.
Professor Sir David Payne, Director of the ORC commented:
“Graham is acknowledged as the individual who initiated the Silicon Photonics research field in the UK, and is particularly well known for his work on silicon optical modulators. He and his team designed the first depletion modulator, which is now an industry standard.
“Having filed over 14 patents and published more than 350 papers in the field, he is both respected and admired around the world.”
