The award-winning StarStream®, invented by researchers at the University, has been highly commended at a ceremony held by The Engineer, a leading technology and innovation journal.
The invention is a technology which allows a gentle stream of water to clean very effectively. It is so good that it can usually clean without having to heat the water (which saves energy) and without any additives (which reduces pollution risk and cost).
The original StarStream® prototypes were invented by Professor Timothy Leighton and Dr Peter Birkin. Ultrawave Ltd., who are commercializing StarStream®, are working alongside Professor Leighton’s team to develop the technology into a product for both general and specific cleaning applications.
StarStream® has already received numerous awards including the Royal Society’s Brian Mercer Award for Innovation; S-Lab’s Best New Product of the Year; and the Institute of Chemical Engineering Award for Water Management and Supply.
Professor Leighton was represented at the awards ceremony by his researchers (LtoR) Maryam Malakoutikhah, Tom Secker and Mengyang Zhu.
Professor Leighton, who could not attend the ceremony because of a prior engagement, said:
“I am honoured and delighted that this invention has been recognised in this way by The Engineer. It has taken not only inventiveness, but also such a measure of perseverance and true grit on behalf of the University team and Ultrawave Ltd., to take StarStream® this far.”
