Watch our Food Security Public Lecture

The second event in our Environment Public Lecture Series will take place today, Wednesday 13 September, at the Royal Society, London from 17:15.

Food security is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind in the 21st century. In this session, we will consider the world’s food system and the issues involved in ensuring food security.

An increasing population, changes in dietary demands associated with wealth and other socio-economic factors, means we currently have almost one billion people who are malnourished and a similar number suffering from nutritional related issues such as obesity.

By attending this event, you will have the opportunity to hear three keynotes delivered by:

  • Professor Guy Poppy, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Food Standards Agency and Professor of Ecology at the University of Southampton,
  • Professor Sir Charles Godfray CBE FRS, Hope Professor of Entomology and Director of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food at Oxford University,
  • Professor Christine Williams OBE, External Director of Food, Agriculture and Health at the University of Reading.

A panel discussion will take place after the keynotes featuring leading University of Southampton experts Professor Barrie Margetts, Professor Tiina Roose and Professor Nyovani Madise.

A live stream of the lecture will be available on the University website, you can watch the live-stream here from 17:15.
