Professor Will Jennings (University of Southampton) and Professor Jane Green (University of Manchester) have featured in the Times Red Box column discussing the lessons that can be learned from Britain’s exit from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) – on the eve of its 25th anniversary – for how Brexit might impact on the way voters view the competence of the Conservative Party.
Professor Will Jennings, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University.
The ERM crisis had profound effects for the party, and Brexit has the potential to have an even bigger impact. This follows on from their recent article in The Washington Post about how voters have perceived the performance of President Trump so far, ‘Voters value competence. That could be bad news for Trump’.
Professor Jennings recently appeared before the House of Lords ‘Political Polling and Digital Media Committee’ giving evidence on trends in polling accuracy and his analysis on the effect of Brexit on economic perceptions was recently cited in the New Statesman. He is continuing to actively seek opportunities to inform a wide selection of policymakers and commentators in the UK and US.
