New kit to help students reduce plastic waste

This year, student enterprise group ‘EthiCo’ will launch a new kit specifically aimed at helping our students to reduce plastic waste.

The EthiCo Essentials Pack consists of a recycled plastic water bottle, sustainably sourced stationery set, recycled A4 paper pad and a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush, all packaged in a fairtrade cotton tote bag.

The start-up, founded earlier in 2017, already markets a reusable coffee cup to reduce waste (an incredible 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups are sent to landfill each year in the UK). EthiCo’s reusable coffee cups are available to buy from the Shop on Top (Highfield Campus) as well as online.

After discussions with the University’s Catering Department, a loyalty scheme has been introduced across our coffee outlets in support of the campaign. Click here to find out more. As well as the University’s outlets, using your own, reusable coffee cups already entitles you to discounts from Pret a Manger (25p off hot drinks) and Costa (also 25p).

Make sure to look out for EthiCo during Freshers’ Week and for more information, visit their website: www.ethicogoods.co.uk or their Instagram @ethicogoods

EthiCo’s 2017 business plan won £2,000 from the University’s SEED Start-Up Funding Competition during the summer. Click here to find out how the competition, brought to you by the Student Enterprise Team, Future Worlds and the Social Impact Lab, can support in the creation and development of your early stage business or social enterprise.
