Diwali or Deepavali, celebrated this year on the 19 October, is the festival of lights celebrated by both Hindus and Sikhs around the world. For Hindus, the festival honours the victory of Ram-Chander (the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu) over Raavan who had kidnapped his wife Sita.
Sikhs celebrate Diwali to mark the release and return of the sixth Guru (spiritual teacher), Guru Hargobind Singh Ji, who also managed to arrange the release of 52 kings who were all held as political prisoners. On both occasions, the route home for the spiritual figures were paved with small clay lamps, signifying the victory of good over evil.
