Professor Iain Cameron has announced that he will be retiring from the University in July 2018 when he completes his second term of office as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He intends to pursue a non-executive career in the health and charity sectors.
Iain joined the University in 1999 as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, having previously been Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Glasgow. As Head of the School of Medicine and Dean (since 2004 and 2010 respectively) he has led a focus on the lifecourse, early clinical translation and links between medicine and the physical sciences. Continuing a close collaboration with University Hospital Southampton, he has overseen the creation of world-class clinical research facilities to translate basic discoveries in order to improve patient care, including the innovative Centre for Cancer Immunology, due to open early next year.

Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor, said:
“Iain has made immense contributions to the University, both in growing the Medical School and its world-class research activities, and in his broader contributions to the University Executive Board, as a previous member of the University Council, and to the wider profession at the highest levels. We are enormously grateful to him for his enduring passion and commitment to the University, to our students, and to his colleagues.”
Professor Iain Cameron said:
“It has been a huge privilege to work with so many dedicated and talented students and staff in the Faculty and across the University, and a particular pleasure to celebrate the achievements of new graduates each year and to see colleagues flourish as their careers develop.”
An international recruitment search for his replacement as Dean will start over the autumn.
