Talk with Dr Suzie Imber, winner of the BBC’s ‘Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?’

Physics and Astronomy and the Women’s Physics Network are delighted to be hosting a free, public talk with Dr Suzie Imber, winner of the recent hit BBC show ‘Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?’

Dr Suzie Imber

Please note: This event is now sold out.

Venue: Building 46 (Physics and Astronomy), Lecture Theatre A

Date and Time: Monday 27 November. The talk starts at 19:30. From 19:00 there’ll be a variety of stalls in the foyer showcasing the Spaceflight Society, as well as astronomy and space-related hands-on demonstrations.

In the BBC show, twelve individuals with the dream of going to space were put through a series of challenges, judged by astronaut Chris Hadfield and his team of experts. The contestants, including pilots, engineers, a surgeon and a dentist, were tested on mental ability, their response to weightlessness and how they handled the experience of g-force. In the final episode, Suzie was declared the winner.

Suzie currently works as an Associate Professor of planetary science at the University of Leicester. Previously, she has worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre and the University of Michigan, and is also involved in instrument design and operation for European Space Agency’s next mission to Mercury.

She is also an experienced mountaineer; Suzie has written computer code to identify and map unclimbed peaks in the Andes and Himalayas before climbing them herself. Suzie’s current research looks at Mercury’s magnetosphere.

Both staff and students are welcome. Suzie will talk about her academic background as a planetary scientist, her experience of climbing mountains in the Andes and her time on the BBC show.
