Lecturer in English Literature, Devorah Baum celebrated in Times Higher Education Supplement

The work of Lecturer in English Literature and Critical Theory, Devorah Baum was profiled in last week’s Times Higher Education Supplement.

Devorah recently published Feeling Jewish (A Book for Just About Anyone) with Yale University Press.

The book delves into fiction, film and memoir to explore feelings with which modern Jews have often been stereotyped. It analyses why such feelings are increasingly common to us all as the pace of globalisation leaves many feeling marginalised, uprooted, and threatened. As Devorah explains, “our feelings have a kind of history“.

The article also celebrates her new book The Jewish Joke, which explores how and why Jewish jokes have survived a long and treacherous history and have been able to move across boundaries without having to rewrite their punchlines.

A third project, her film documentary The New Man (2016), was funded by The Wellcome Trust and explores pregnancy from a male point of view.
