Southampton’s excellence in Life Sciences is set to be strengthened further by the development of a Life Sciences strategy.
The University held a review last year to establish the full extent of Life Sciences activities across the organisation and the impact they have on the University’s economy. The review revealed the incredible reach and breadth of activity being carried out across all the faculties, with over 700 research group leaders active in life sciences yielding approximately half of the University’s research income over a 2 year period.
Professor Peter JS Smith, Director of the Institute for Life Sciences, is co-ordinating the Life Sciences strategy development. He said:
“These results provide great opportunities for collaborative research, education and enterprise. We are now focusing on how we can better understand and further develop these strengths into a strategy that capitalises on Southampton’s excellence and our collaborative culture.”
The steering committee, chaired by Peter, are developing the strategy around a matrix of Southampton strengths below with the aim of producing a draft by the end of this year and a final recommendation by March 2018.
