October Student Forum – the changes you’ve helped to make

At our October Forum, a great number of you attended and provided us with a wealth of feedback which has been reviewed and responded to by key figures such as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden; the Executive Director of Student Experience, Jane Savidge; and the Students’ Union VP Education, Samuel Dedman.

Below, you’ll find details about some of the changes made since the forum, due to your feedback:

  • We heard: Can the University put more emphasis on student to staff feedback?
  • So we: As well as promoting the importance of classic feedback routes such as the academic representative network, NSS survey and module evaluation (to name just a few), the University has now launched a feedback button which enables students to find out how and where to give feedback. Available on SUSSED, student desktops and the MySouthampton app, the University will be working to further develop this feature as a direct way to give feedback.
  • We heard: Does the University/Union provide quiet chill-out areas for students struggling with stress or anxiety?
  • So we: Both the University and the Students’ Union understand how crucial these spaces are for students. With demand for chill-out areas increasing, the University will be publishing a list of all the different spaces across our campuses (both study and chill-out), which will be available before Christmas 2017. The Union’s Education Zone is running a consultation over the next month into what chill-out spaces would be welcomed in Building 42. If you have suggestions or ideas, please stop by the Union’s Coffee and Consultation event on the Redbrick on Tuesday 5 December 2017.
  • We heard: We would like the University to supply free boiling water across our campuses. At the moment we are charged up to 50p.
  • So we: From Friday 1 December 2017, free boiling water will be available across all University catering outlets, on the basis that people bring their own cups/flasks to be filled. In the meantime, hot water can be sourced from the Students’ Union free of charge.

The next Student Forum will be taking place early next year, so keep an eye out on SUSSED for further updates.
