From 1 January 2018, as a result of regulatory changes put in place by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the way in which you pay for parking at the University will change.
If you are currently paying for parking via salary sacrifice, this option will no longer be available when applications open. You will still be able to pay for parking via salary deduction, but these payments will no longer benefit from the tax benefits that were previously available.
The University will be introducing an alternative benefit aimed at users of lower emission vehicles, in recognition of the air quality challenges experienced in Southampton. For 2018 permit applications, those driving cars recorded on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA) database as emitting under 120g of CO2 will be able to apply for a reduced price permit. Those driving vehicles emitting over 120g of CO2, or who choose not to declare their emissions, will apply for permits at the standard rate.
You can check the CO2 emissions of your vehicle on your registration documents or via the DVLA website here. We will be providing a link through the parking application pages as well so you can check when you apply for a permit.
Details of the permit application process will be circulated by email and can be found on the University car parking webpages. Permits for car sharing and flexible permits to support travel via other means will remain in place at the same rates as in 2017.
