Earlier this month, the University of Southampton Shine BAME (Black Asian and Minority Ethnic) Staff Network and the Students’ Union brought together over 50 staff and students to celebrate Diwali.
Diwali or Deepavali, celebrated this year on the 19 October, is the festival of lights celebrated by both Hindus and Sikhs around the world.
Members of the Student Unions’ Bhangra Soc entertained attendees with a dance performance
The event included a welcome from Professor Colin Grant (Vice-President International), who spoke of the University’s ongoing commitment to building strong international and global partnerships.
The Bhangra Society performed some traditional Indian dances, and guests were able to meet and connect with new people from across the University.
Dr Pathik Pathak, Chair of UoS Shine BAME Staff Network, commented:
“Our Diwali lunch recognised how important the festival is for so many of our staff, and the Shine BAME network is committed to celebrating cultural events which not part of the traditional calendar. We were delighted to collaborate with SUSU, because it’s events like these which bring staff and students together from across the university.”
