The red ribbon worn for World AIDS Day
This year, the UK has seen the first significant reduction in HIV diagnosis, thanks to frequent testing and rapid treatment. Individuals with HIV who are on medication and have an undetectable viral load pose no risk to anyone else. World AIDS Day is about expanding this success, to include everybody at risk. But the fight is not just about the virus.
The Terence Higgins Trust confirm that for more than 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK, ignorance and discrimination can still limit opportunities, preventing them from living full and happy lives. HIV means you are more likely to live in poverty, and more likely to have poor mental health.
Jonathan, the President of the SUSU LGBT+ Society commented:
“The virus affects anyone regardless of their identity or level of education, and we can make a positive difference to the community.”
James Allen, Chair of the Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network said:
“World AIDS Day is about working together to end the transmission, isolation and stigma of HIV testing and receiving treatment.”
