Megan explained:
“When I started my degree I was interested in a career as a business consultant so I looked for opportunities that would develop the appropriate skills. The university had just introduced a YIE programme so I signed up. Having previously taken part in the Business Innovation Programme strengthened my CV and gave me the confidence to apply for placement schemes.
The Year in Employment allowed me to develop my skills to a greater depth. I was surrounded by experienced colleagues who mentored me, I had access to multiple training opportunities and had regular performance feedback from both of my managers. I developed rapport building skills as I liaised with senior colleagues and candidates regularly. I also developed my presentation skills and presented solo to around 20 graduates at bi-weekly assessment centres. My placement also introduced me to other skills, for example; leading meetings, project managing graduate induction courses and redesigning recruitment processes with my team.
I have implemented many of my new skills such as project management into my approach to work during my final year at university. I highly recommend completing a Year in Employment as you will not only gain invaluable skills but will know more about what you want to do (or don’t want to do!) as a career.“
