The University has received formal notification from the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU), that it has asked its members across the UK to support strike action, in relation to the proposed changes to the USS pension.
UCU Southampton has confirmed its intention to support fourteen days of strike action plus action short of a strike. The planned dates for strike action are:
- February 22, 23, 26, 27, 28
- March 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
Action short of a strike will consist of participating members working to contract, not covering for absent colleagues, not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action, and not undertaking any voluntary activities. It will take place from Thursday 22 February to no later than Monday 18 June 2018.
Our primary concern is that our students are not disadvantaged by this proposed action and that there is minimal disruption to your studies and progression. The University is working hard with your representatives from the Students’ Union (SUSU) and other colleagues to put in place effective contingency plans, so that you can continue with your studies as planned.
You should continue with your studies and preparations for assessments as normal.
If this national action by the trade union does take place, you will be informed through the Sussed portal. Should there be any variation to your academic schedule you will be notified by your faculty’s Student Office.
The University respects the right of trade union members to take industrial action, but hopes that support for our students and other University activities will be a major consideration when members are deciding whether or not to participate.
